Welcome to the Parrot Garden! This is the part of Best Friends where you can talk to the animals - and one of them just might talk back!
Parrots lose their homes just like dogs and cats. In fact, they have some special challenges because they can live so long (more than 80 years sometimes) and they need so much entertainment and attention throughout their whole lives. It can be hard for them to find a "forever" place to stay. But here at Best Friends' Parrot Garden, they have a safe haven where they can rest their wings whenever life throws them a curve ball. And it's a home-between-homes for little birds, too!
Step inside the building, and you may feel the calm of a tropical rainforest. Soft music trickles round the corners, and the rooms are full of natural light.
Caregivers are chopping up fresh veggies and grains for the more than 200 birds and exotic pets who take refuge here. Some parrots are perched on people's arms, getting 'a lift' so they can spend the afternoon in the sweet sunshine. Others prefer an "indoor recess" (Hint: it's always recess at Best Friends), and are pecking at their new toys, strutting in front of the mirror, or just doing a bit of flying around the room.
"Hello, did you eat your pea soup?" Cody will ask. (Either this is a traditional greeting in the tropical rainforest, or else a phrase someone taught him in a former life. We're guessing it's the second, although you never know!)
Next, Paco will call, "Hello! I love you!" (We don't want you to feel you're not special, however ...he does say this to everyone.)
And then, the parrots, being the group-spirited animals they are, all begin to chime in. You have officially been welcomed to Parrot Garden. Why don't you come take a closer look?
This is all possible thanks to your continued support. Click here to become a Parrot Garden Sponsor. |
