Creative Volunteering

Girl Scout Stephanie Bachman had to get creative when she decided her service project would be for the animals. Most shelters and zoos have an age limit for volunteers which made it impossible for this 12-year-old to do hands-on work.

But that didn't stop Stephanie, who focused instead on what she could do. With some help from Best Friends, she offered information on Pet Care and Safety, Getting a Pet, and Careers with Animals to other students at Wasatch Elementary in Salt Lake City.

She also collected bedding and toys to donate for animals. And she held a yard sale to raise money for Best Friends (she raised $115). To top it all off, she took part in the Salt Lake City Super Adoptions!

Last week, Stephanie and her Girl Scout troop came to visit the sanctuary. Here, children are allowed to volunteer provided they are accompanied by an adult - in this case Stephanie's mom, Catherine Bachman.

The girls spent a full day laughing, playing, and helping to socialize dogs and cats who needed experience being with children. The animals especially loved being groomed and hugged by the girls.

"It makes me feel good to be able to help out at the TLC Cat Club," Stephanie said. "And I will keep helping out at the Super Adoptions."

What a super volunteer!
