Furry Flier Miles
Here's how one caring woman was able to donate transportation - without even reaching for her car keys!
Kami, an eight-year-old shih tzu mix, had come to Best Friends all the way from Taiwan via the Taipei Abandoned Animal Rescue Foundation. Now she was ready to head off on another long journey - to her new home in Wisconsin. But how to get her there, since her new family couldn't drive her back from the sanctuary?
The answer began with Best Friends member Thelma Dana. An active member of the Northern California Geological Society, she had done an awful lot of traveling in her life: Turkey, Greenland, Iceland, and more - all of which added up to a lot of frequent flyer miles!
As soon as she received an e-mail from the Best Friends Network, Thelma donated the frequent flyer miles needed to get Kami from Best Friends to Wisconsin. And staffer Kristi Littrell, who had been fostering Kami, was more than willing to "go the extra mile" with her.
Kristi says that dogs in foster homes sometimes take a while to adjust to their new home. But not Kami. "When I handed her over to her new family, she simply looked back at me with a quick thank-you, and trotted off into her new life.
"It was a long journey from the streets of Taiwan, via Best Friends, to her forever home in Wisconsin (pictured). And it was totally worth it."
