Independence Day for rescued rabbits in Reno

Last spay/neuter for the Great Bunny Rescue of 2006

07/02/2006 9:32 AM

Kanab, UT (07/02/2006) - Best Friends Animal Society recently stepped in to help rescue over 1,400 rabbits in Reno, Nevada.  The rabbits have been moved to a ranch in Lemmon Valley.

Best Friends staff and many volunteers have worked tirelessly to put up enclosures for the bunnies and make sure they are fed and given the best medical care.

One of the goals of the Great Bunny Rescue of  2006 was to get each and every one of the rabbits spayed and neutered.  Many veterinarians and vet techs volunteered their time and expertise to getting this done.

After many months, the spay/neuter goal is in sight.  The last rescued bunnies will be spayed and neutered by July 3, just in time for these rescued rabbits to celebrate their independence!

Richard Crook, Rapid Response Manager for Best Friends, is overseeing operations at the bunny ranch.  He said, "This has been an amazing operation.  Kudos to all those who had a part in this from the beginning to the end and from the field to the office.  To be able to spay and neuter 1,400 bunnies in the field in less than three months is quite an astounding feat."

Now that the spay and neutering is almost completed, the next goal is to get the rescued bunnies permanent homes.  Best Friends is currently working with individuals and organizations to achieve this goal.
