Head of House Rabbit Society takes 5 (bunnies) in Albuquerque
Kanab, UT (06/09/2006) - Five bunnies land at an Albuquerque airport on Saturday, part of The Great Bunny Rescue of 2006, the largest rescue effort by Best Friends Animal Society since Hurricane Katrina.
Premiere rabbit rescue organizations, as well as other good animal rescue groups, are taking the rabbits in groups of about 10, or more. On Saturday, Margo DeMello, administrative director of the House Rabbit Society, will be in Albuquerque to take five of the Reno rabbits into her home in Placitas, about 20 minutes outside of Albuquerque.
Margo said the irony is that as rabbits have become more popular as house pets, they are also being abandoned in much higher numbers, joining dogs and cats as among the most euthanized animals in this country.
"The public needs to realize that rabbits are not starter pets or simple children's pets, but are complex, intelligent, and high-maintenance animals who, while providing an enormous source of joy the families who live with them, are not for everyone.
"House Rabbit Society's volunteer fosterers and educators, while overwhelmed with the numbers of homeless rabbits already in our local shelters and foster homes, want to support Best Friends' Reno rescue as much as we can, and are doing so via helping with transportation, spay/neuter, adoption screening, donations, and, in some cases, taking in a few rabbits from the rescue.
"I personally wanted to help because of the magnitude of the crisis--with well over a thousand rabbits to place, there is no way that one organization can solve this enormous situation on their own. And because I am lucky enough to have a set up in my home that allows a few dozen rabbits to live as a group in a totally safe, secure environment, and it's not too difficult to introduce new rabbits to the group, I didn't think I could say no to providing a home for just a few. Hopefully the Reno rabbits will like New Mexico."
