Bunny groups hop into the middle of largest rabbit rescue in history

June 09,2006: 12:00AM
Scottsdale rescue group take 8

Kanab, UT (06/09/2006) - Eight bunnies land at the Scottsdale Airport on Saturday, part of The Great Bunny Rescue of 2006, the largest rescue effort by Best Friends Animal Society since Hurricane Katrina.

The bunnies are among the very first to be placed through Rabbit Rangers, an innovative program to provide shelter to the 1,600 rabbits Best Friends rescued from one backyard in Reno, Nevada.

Premiere rabbit rescue organizations, as well as other good animal rescue groups, are taking groups of the rabbits and will be looking for good homes for the rabbits. On Saturday, Brambly Hedge Rabbit Rescue, will be at the Scottsdale Airport to take eight of the rabbits.

"We got involved because this is a dire situation," Kim Dezelon, spokesperson for Brambley Hedge said. "These rabbits have never been socialized and are not tame. We have an outdoor sanctuary with a misting system and we have the room to take care of eight. And we have always worked with Best Friends."

While The Great Bunny Rescue of 2006 is a dramatically big one, it draws attention to the plight of rabbits in this country. Rabbits have become more popular as house pets but they are also being abandoned in much higher numbers, joining dogs and cats as among the most euthanized animals in this country.
